My new podcast project, JTech Weekly, a podcast that discusses the merging of technology and journalism, has published its first episode and is now available in iTunes! Run a search for “jtech weekly” (and beware, we are not the French Java Technology podcast, just similarly named, unfortunately) or just click this link right here to open up our iTunes site and subscribe. Here’s the description of the first episdoe.

In this week’s epsiode, Chris, Josh and Andrew talk about the recently released Apple iPad and its possible implications on the journalism industry. With more news organizations moving to the iPad to create new subscription models, is Apple in danger of controlling the news?

On a similar vein, we discuss the returning trend of paywalls with online journalism as the New York Times plans what we dub “freemium journalism” with a limited pay structure. And finally, we discuss the controversial Wikileaks video of the death of two Reuters journalists in Iraq at the hands of the U.S. Military. Where do we draw the line between journalism and watchdog journalism?

I am very excited about this new project and any feedback about the podcast is much appreciated! Just contact me or send an email to mail [at] jtechweekly [dot] com. Also, please do us a favor and become a fan of ours on Facebook and follow us on Twitter; that would be much appreciated. If you have topic ideas or any other suggestions, send us an email at the address above.

We have some interesting ideas we may implement in the coming weeks so be sure to come back to the site for updates! Thanks everyone!

Add depth with some blurring.

Vignette the edges.

Papelbon can’t believe it. Now he has to do his underwear jig. Red Sox win the World Series, and now I will pelt you with stats. It was a post-season of the little guys, the rookies, the under-the-radar players…

Pedroia : 5-18 (.278), 2 walks, 4 RsBI*
Ellsbury : 7-16 (.438), 2 walks, 2 RsBI
Lowell : 6-15 (.400), 3 walks, 4 RsBI
Lugo : 5-13 (.385), 3 walks, 1 RBI

Lowell walked away with the MVP, but it could have gone to Pedroia or Ellsbury easily as well. Lowell was the only of these four to have a hit in each of the four games. Pedroia, the ASU grad, was probably a couple hits and walks away from stealing it from Lowell. He went 0-4 tonight, can’t give the guy the trophey after going 0-4 in game 4. Ellsbury started the series going 0-4 with a walk, then had a big game three, going 4-5 with 2 RsBI. Elsewhere, Papelbon is god.

Papelbon : 3 games, 3 saves, 0 runs, 4.1 innings, 2 hits, 3 strikeouts

Papelbon also threw 41 strikes out of 54 total pitches. Also, Beckett was amazing in game one, Matsuzaka came up big in game 3, not to mention getting an RBI single. The Red Sox are champions because of their supreme batting (I haven’t even mentioned sluggers Ramirez, Ortiz or Youkilis) and their dominant pitching staff (including the bullpen “pirates” who drum it up in the bullpen during games).

Manager Terry Francona is now 8-0 in the World Series, the only manager to do so. The Red Sox win their second World Series in 4 years in similar fashion… In 2004, the Sox went 98-64 and were the Wild Card team, and came back from a 3-0 defecit in the ALCS to go on to sweep 8 wins in a row. This year, the Sox went 96-66 (a worse record) and won the AL East, came back from a 3-1 defecit in the ALCS to win 7 straight games in a row for another world title. 2007 is Boston’s 7th title, and they now move into 4th on the all time titles list, behind Oakland (9… getcha in ’09), St. Louis (10… going down in 2010) and The Yankees (26… damn, the soonest we can tie is 2026, when I’m 38 years old).

So the Red Sox sweep the Rockies, making this the third World Series sweep in 4 years. Whats next? Alex Rodriguez just opted out of his Yankee contract. Though I hate the guy, if we sign him, Red Sox will dominate the AL for all eternity.

All is well in the nation, now on to sunday worship. The Patriots! (And BC on Saturdays!)

For some reason, I really like Wimbledon. I think it’s somthing to do with having spent many a summer at a lake house in New Hampshire and I would wake up every morning and watch the tournament while eating a English muffin. Anyway, this years tournament is off to a crazy start. In the first round, Tim Henman came from behind after being down 2 sets to 1, to win in the fifth set by a score of 13-11. In case you didn’t know, you win a set by being the first to 6 points, only you have to win by two points. So that one went on forever.

Then today, the Williams sisters had two lucky wins. Venus Williams came from behind in the third set to win, while her sister upstaged her by winning despite getting an extreme calf cramp during the match (see picture). Serena got way lucky though, because right after she got hurt there was a rain delay so she could let her calf relax. After she got hurt and before the rain, she could hardly move, and got destroyed for a few sets. If not for the rain, she would have lost, hard core. Her opponent had a bizarre moment also when she double faulted after serving twice directly into the ground in front of her. I like how well the Williams sisters play, but I could do without their shrill screams after every strike of the ball. Enough already.

Few people probably realize that since October of 2003, I have kept a short one-line log of basic events of every since then. It allows me to look back and pinpoint when certain events took place, and to see who I was hanging out with, who I was dating, where I was, what my state of mind might have been, etc… Maybe that’s why I am so into history, cause in a way I am a historian of my own thoughts and feelings.

Well I thought today we would take a look back, for the premier edition of “Today in Chris Cameron History”. There’s a point to this I swear. Today is May 9th, so lets look back on previous May 9th’s. Quoting from my log:

“May 9th 2005 – Chilled, talked to Kellen”

“Chilled” is my shorthand for just sitting around my house doing meaningless things, such as web browsing, TV viewing, napping, and other innocuous things of the sort. Nothing terribly interesting happened on this day in Chris Cameron history, but the “talked to Kellen” part is the only part of the day that had any significance. At this point, I had just become friends with Kellen, and we were chatting online and getting to know each other. So why did I feel that a simple chat session deemed its own recognition in this log dealy? Well, at the time I was starting to like Kellen, and her I (as is evidence of our date on May 11th), so I thought I would note that day that I had spoken to her. Anyway, we did go on a date two days later, and it went very well, we saw Amityville Horror, and it was great fun. The next day, she told me she couldn’t start dating me, and that was that. I’ve already written about this event (I did so back in 2005, it’s called “The Morning After”). I’m not trying to re-open an old can of worms, I’m just providing this as evidence for Today in Chris Cameron History. My point is, Kellen wanted to just be friends with me after this point, no hard feelings, in fact we are good friends to this day.

Moving on:

“May 9th 2006 – Chilled, lessons, Xanna :(“

There’s that infamous “chilled” again. My life gets boring, a lot. The “lessons” refers to a few lessons I taught at that time, probably kids trying to make drum-line or wanting basic drum-set skills. Anyway, “Xanna :(” refers to when after dating Christanna for a while, she suddenly decided she wanted to be “just friends” (hence the frowny face). Obviously things changed a few weeks later, and then we dated until we just recently broke up, about a year after first meeting each other. So looking back, this day wasn’t as bad as the frowny face might make you think (although the frowny face usually only makes appearances in my log when relationships with girls come to an end), because things changed for the better. But anyway, the point here is, a year later, my how things have changed.

Todays log hasn’t been written yet (it’s only 1pm), but it might go somthing like this:

“May 9th 2007 – Chilled, Xanna :(, Gig”

Now, we understand “chilled” means I did a lot of nothing, and “Gig” means I have a Steel Band gig to play at today, but again we see “Xanna :(“. No, Christanna and I did not break up again, that happened on May 1st (“Class, DV, Xanna’s BDay, broke up :(“), but rather somthing even worse, I believe has happened. In fact, its the exact opposite of what happened exactly a year ago. Last year she said she wanted to just be friends. Today, she says she can no longer be my friend, or at least not until the pain of our breakup goes away.

What a day in Chris Cameron history.

The confusing thing is yesterday all seemed well. We seemed sure to be still good friends, we talked on the phone and discussed some things, talked like normal friends do, I invited her to an event tonight, she asked me to help her move out of her apartment later this month, etc etc. I did not see this coming when I opened my email this morning. Apparently yesterday was some sort of “lie” as she puts it, and she realized she still is hurting, a lot, and cannot be my friend because it hurts too much. To me this is worse than breaking up. For me, breaking up doesn’t mean no more friendship. This will be the first person I’ve dated and broken up with who doesn’t stay a good friend (unless things change later on).

So I’ve come to realize that, perhaps I need to beware the “Ides of May”, because May 9th in my history has proved disappointing. It seems I’m always single when I’m the most bored; summer time. Right as school ends, so do relationships. It’s ironic. Summer is supposed to be full of happiness and prosperity, and it tends to only bring me despair and loneliness.

However, this year I’, going to try and get the better hand of summer. Try not to let it bring me down as it usually does. Try not to let boredom overcome me. I’ll let ya know how it goes. Things could be better, but I know from experience that they could be worse. So in the words of John Lennon and the Beatles, “here comes the sun, and I say, it’s alright”.

Spam. The name gained notoriety as processed meat in a can. Today Spam means “junk email”. Spam is not only a noun, but also a verb. “I have been spammed” means that I have received Spam email. I don’t think I’ve heard it used as an adjective but why not, some emails are just plain “spammy”.

Anyway, I receive spam every day, but no spam email, in their attempts to catch my attention, has ever touched me the way the following one has. It is purely indescribable. It came to me as one paragraph of text, so I separated out the lines, to make it more like a poem. Read.

Itchy foot, itchy foot, itchy foot itch!
The ceiling again.
My feet struck and stuck,
I switched off power to forgotten.
Correct?
Have been thinking about the poison,
and counting the days before I…

Hour.
Groups who believed in the inevitability of the coming war,
As Blue world – guest- who looked very impressed,
By the talking-dog sequence.

Well, guessing.
I put the finger out again,
And promised myself that I would.
The novelty of the offer and their inherent greed
Warded off any…

Eleven days to go.
The morning market had better produce something.
Occupant must be a familiar sight to him.
Will be to get one of the ships launches down here.

With that I can make the reluctant decision
That it would be all right.
The reception.
“Return,” Arroz said to his mates.
I will explain the Law to this snoring forms.
I shook my hands over my head.
We did many an encore this day.
Finished finally with the feeling of…

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. There are not words to describe this poetic piece of cyber garbage. I hope you all were as moved by this as I was.

Man, SNL is not funny anymore. I know, I’m behind the times, right? But nonetheless, the show is still not funny anymore. At first it was just slowly falling out of funny, but now its just plain not funny anymore. I used to get excited for SNL, and I would make sure to be tuned in early cause the show usually started at 10:27. Now I really don’t even care for the show, and I after tonight, I wish I would have just kept on watching “Futureweapons” on Discovery Channel. I would rather have watched a show on some new lightweight machine-gun whose bullets can pierce 8 layers of “bullet-proof” glass. Or Mythbusters, that show freakin’ rocks.

But instead I watched SNL, hosted by Julia Louis Dreyfus. Who? The girl from Seinfeld. Ooooh, her. Ya, cool lame. Anyway, the show sucked. There just isn’t enough talent on the cast anymore. Unfortunatly for SNL, the majority of the show usually sucks and there is one or two funny sketches. Usually one. It’s usually either some “Digital Short” (ie: “Lazy Sunday”, and “Dick In A Boz”) or Weekend Update. I was just about to say there were zero funny sketches tonight, but I actually just managed to chuckle at a sketch about robot sex.

So tonight sucked, and not just the sketches but the music too. The guest band was Snow Patrol. SNOW PATROL?!?! Come on. SNL is supposed to be a landmark performance for a band. Bands like Aerosmith and AC DC and U2 have performed on SNL, not these run-of-the-mill emo kid bands.

Which reminds me of this years Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. They had a section where models posed with musicians. I can understand Kenny Chesney, and Jimmy Buffett. But they posed models with Gnarles Barkley (the group, not the basketball player turned fatty annoying TNT analyst) and Panic at the Disco. First of all, what the hell kind of name is Panic at the Disco? The only good thing about that name is a T-Shirt I saw online that said “Hispanic at the Disco”. Second of all, the model in the picture with them had less eye makeup than 3 out of the 4 members of the band. And their jeans were probably tighter than her swimsuit.

Getting back on topic, why the eff is Snow Patrol at SNL? And why are they paired with Julia Louis Dreyfus? I picture a group like the Police or James Taylor paired up with her, not Snow effin Patrol. Tune in next week to see Dame Judy Dench with musical guest, Slipknot. Man I wish… but anyway… SNL… still not funny… getting worse… yeah. Bring back Alec Baldwin for the 40th time, or just have Christopher Walken dance on stage for an hour and a half, and it would be funnier than this. Oh wait, Alec Baldwin is too busy doing another NBC show with Tina Fey. What’s that show about? Oh yeah, it’s about a weekend comedy show thats struggling to come up with funny material. Now theres a show I can watch. I think I’m gonna stick to not watching SNL, and just watching the one funny sketch they had on YouTube the next day. Way better use of my time.
