Episode 7 of The Andrew Long Show is up now for download. I was unable to attend the recording of this week’s episode since I was in Las Vegas, but Andrew was able to edit it together and put it up. Also new this week, I figured out how to make sure our fine artwork shows up in iTunes, so now when you download it you’ll see the show’s logo.

This week Andrew talked with Ryan Guzy of the Tempe Bicycle Action Group, which advocates for cyclists rights. Should be an interesting episode, so have a listen, I know I will!

I forgot to post about Episode 5 where we spoke to the founders and organizers of Ignite Phoenix, so be sure to check out that episode as well.

Here’s Andrew’s description of his guests from Episode 6 on urban agriculture taken from AndrewLongshow.com.

Diann Peart is a member of the Phoenix Permaculture Guild Board. Diann lives in a flood-irrigated old neighborhood in Tempe and is actively converting her large yard into a teaching and demonstration garden for the East Valley. Diann hosted and produced The Urban Gardener for Chandler Educational TV. She earned her doctoral degree in Botany from ASU with research on island ecology. In 2008, she launched Herb’n Organics with Candice Hartwell. The company produces eco-friendly, chemical free, all natural home cleaning products which are currently available at Downtown Phoenix Public Market and Whole Foods Markets in Arizona.

Greg Peterson is recognized locally as an expert in green living and sustainability. After receiving his Masters degree in Urban and Environmental Planning in 2006, he merged academic planning with over 34 years of self study into a cohesive green living conversation. Greg is the creator of the innovative holistic home site, The Urban Farm and YourGuideToGreen.com. He is a writer, teacher and lecturer on many aspects of sustainability, green living and permaculture. Greg lives what he speaks and believes his purpose each day is to “Inspire people into their own greenness.”

Doreen Pollack (AKA The Garden Goddess) is a Master Gardener, Permaculture Designer, community leader and the owner of Down 2 Earth Gardens, a garden consulting company in Phoenix. Doreen provides advice to homeowners on how to reduce the use and dependency of outside resources in their landscape. She is also a contributor to several on-line websites, magazines, television and radio shows. Doreen has also turned her own urban plot in a downtown Phoenix Historic District into an example of what she teaches.

Kimber Lanning is an entrepreneur, arts advocate and community activist who works to cultivate strong, vibrant communities and inspire a higher quality of life throughout Arizona. Lanning is actively involved in fostering cultural diversity, economic self-reliance, regional planning, and responsible growth. In 2003, Lanning founded Local First Arizona, and has secured both a 501c6 and 501c3 for the organization. She is Executive Director of both organizations and oversees their 1800 business members statewide.

So we’re releasing The Andrew Long Show on Fridays from now on because we get more listeners on the weekends. This week we spoke with Ray Stern of the Phoenix New Times and J.J. Hensley of the Arizona Republic on what it’s like to cover controversial Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

If you don’t know Joe, he’s an interesting character who has a love/hate relationship with the local media. At times, he will pull stunts, like marching prisoners down the street in pink overalls, because he knows the media will show up. Other times, he’s chewing out journalists for printing lies about him and his staff.

He recently visited the Cronkite School to speak in a forum discussion with some of the journalism professors there. Unfortunately he left early when some protestors began singing Bohemian Rhapsody with immigration rights lyrics substituting the original words. He is a polarizing figure, and Hensley and Stern are on a first name basis with the man.

Check out this week’s interview to learn what it’s like to shadow one of the nation’s most controversial political figures. Stern and Hensley also provide their take on the rumors that Joe might run for the governorship of Arizona, so listen to hear their take!

Episode 3 of The Andrew Long Show is now available in our iTunes feed. This week we spoke with Lara Hardwick, who owns Arizona’s first independent cheese shop, Petit Fromage. She talks about, well, cheese, as well as how she came to be the proud owner of the state’s first specialty cheese shop.

The podcast is starting to come along better with each episode. The first episode featured three guests, the second had two, and now we had just a one-on-one interview-style episode. Personally I prefer these one-on-one interviews, but two guests isn’t bad. This episode had more editing that the previous two, which I think helps keep things rolling (taking out long pauses).

Next week we will be interviewing some journalists from the Arizona Republic who cover controversial county sheriff Joe Arpaio. Also, we are working on a second series of podcasts on the intersection of technology and journalism, so keep an eye out for that!
